There was a time when we knew what mattered...a
time when all that we cared about was companionship and survival.
These days, there's certainly not among the general population or public's
concern. Every time you walk into a merchandising store within at
least my country, the all wonderful United States(yeah, right), you are
bombarded with getting a better body, being more sexy, buying the better
clothes. After all, that's the main thing that drives the textile
industry - it's all about money.
Before we had all of this, though, we
were still back in the place of what might be thought of as the realm of
Adam & Eve...ah, yes, and then clothes were created to protect. Is
that what clothes are for now? Well, not usually. Usually,
it's for style, it's for appeal, it's for loads of things that never
fitted clothing's original purpose, but lost with its original purpose
came the loss of something far greater than I think anyone will ever get
to know.
Naturism does more than merely
separate the American cultural association of sex to nudity. It does
more than equalize the play field in who people are - so you have to get
to know them before you can judge them. It does more than allow many
to feel free, relaxed, or unburdened. Naturism is a pinnacle for
giving a small dose into who we once were as human beings. There
used to be time when all we knew were our families, when the only people
we chased after were our loved ones. But this time could easily be
over 25,000 years ago. A lot can change in 25,000 years, or for that
matter, even one year, right?
I've always questioned everything
I've ever been interested in, be it catharsis in music, the efficiency of
PhotoReading, but the purposes, the somethings about nudity have
always puzzled me. In fine art, the nude form has always been
something that has fascinated people and kept people drawing it for ages.
But why is the nude body so damn interesting? I mean, what the
hell is it? To me, it's our natural affinity to use our capacity
of intuition for studying a fellow human being. To me, it's easier
to develop a compassion for another's well being if you see them naked.
You might say vulnerability is the reason, we take compassion to things
and beings that vulnerable...I don't think that's entirely it.
For as long as I've been interested in this, I've asked what is it?
Why is it so interesting? What is it?!
Could sex be at the subconscious root of all this? I think I have an
answer. And the answer is that it does. Yes, that's right.
Sex is at the subconscious root of all this. But then again, sex is
at the subconscious root of everything that we do relating to
people, according to that guy Sigmund Freud. And hey, if a cocaine
addicted psychologist said something like that several years ago and never
spent any time with social nudity - it MUST be true...right?
Seriously, though. When we say
that sex is at the subconscious root of all this, many middle eastern
philosophies, practices, and hell - even general ways of thinking outside
of Freudian psychology are reinforcing this idea. In many Chinese
practices, one of the centers for energy is our sexual energy, and oddly
enough - they say that any interaction with people is spawned by
the energy in this energy center.
What this means is that
sexuality is merely part of being a human being, and this we all
definitely know. But in American culture, sexuality can be vividly
two sided. It's either sexual, or it's not, never any in betweens or
happy mediums. The truth of the matter is, though, is that there is
always some element of free flowing sexuality in everyone - we're human,
and it exists. It is always there. There's no need for this
kind of confusion that has taken place. Sexuality exists as part of
a whole human being. You do not have, for instance, talents,
intelligence, a job, a family, an athletic affinity, and only a single
friend, but not have sexuality. If you're human, sexuality exists.
Every picture on this Spotlight can be viewed as either sexual or
non-sexual. I once remarked about a photo I saw: I think there
could be some kind of sexual overtone to it, very subtly. A
friend of mine said, "Of course, it's a picture of a human being, and
that's part of being human."
The bottom line is that if your
concern is that it has to do with sex, the answer, following this train of
thought, is yes. But then again, with this philosophy, EVERYTHING
has sex in it. Why? Because sex should not be separated from
what we consider to be human characteristics, what's part of an
individual's personality, a person's physical form, a person's age, a
person's whole being. Sexuality is misunderstood nearly all
over the world today.
Nudity is neither sexual or
non-sexual. It is neither, it's simply nudity.
Every day, we put up our walls and
shelter ourselves from other people. Many individuals are becoming
less socially involved in general. We live in the age of computers,
where online conversations are beginning to dominate. Could our
initial fear, nervousness, and over exaggerated negative perceptions of
naturism within general society simply be the result of a life in hiding
and closed mindedness? Personally, I think it's possible. And
it's not going to be easy to get the world to wake up either.
